By Elijah J. Magnier:
A full-scale invasion of Lebanon by Israeli armoured divisions is anticipated to begin following the authorisation of the second phase of the conflict by Israeli Chief of Staff Herzi Halevi. In the initial weeks of the war, the Israeli military focused on laying the groundwork for an intensified offensive, deploying infantry units to locate and dismantle Hezbollah’s forward ammunition depots and systematically flatten dozens of villages along the border. Under instructions from Hezbollah leadership, these storage sites were swiftly evacuated in anticipation of an impending Israeli escalation. Spanning approximately 100 kilometres along the Lebanon-Israel border, Israel has concentrated five divisions tasked with “clearing the path” by securing strategic locations in preparation for the advance of armoured units.
For over 50 days, Israel’s strategy has centred on deploying paratroopers and infantry forces to demolish homes and ammunition caches identified through intelligence efforts systematically. This preparatory phase is intended to ease the entry of tank divisions into Lebanon, setting the stage for a more expansive and entrenched ground invasion. Israel’s escalation underscores its determination to prevent Hezbollah from holding territory in southern Lebanon and to assert its terms on a Lebanon it considers unprepared to meet Israeli demands.
A key obstacle to Israel’s ambitions, however, is Lebanon’s adherence to the United Nations Security Council Resolution (UNSCR) 1701, which mandates an Israeli withdrawal from Lebanese territory. This obligation no longer aligns with Israel’s expanded objectives. While Israel has, for the time being, refrained from directly demanding Hezbollah’s disarmament, it insists on preventing further Iranian arms transfers to Hezbollah via Syria, maintaining control over the absence of weapons in designated areas (in violation of Lebanon’s sovereignty), and securing Hezbollah’s withdrawal from southern Lebanon. Yet, these demands are unlikely to be met.
