Is Ansar Allah Serving Iran or Pursuing Yemen’s Own War?

In recent days, Ansar Allah has seized approximately 5,400 square kilometres of territory—a figure acknowledged by commanders of the retreating opposing forces—and continues to advance through the Kahbub mountains on Bab el-Mandeb where the situation remains fluid. Its adversaries remain on the defensive despite sustained Saudi air support and repeated air strikes intended to halt the movement’s progress across multiple fronts. This rapid territorial expansion has once again encouraged outside observers to interpret developments in Yemen principally as an extension of Iranian power.

Yemen is repeatedly explained through two convenient formulas: a Sunni–Shia war and an Iranian proxy conflict. Both contain fragments of truth, but together they obscure far more than they reveal. Ansar Allah emerged from a Zaydi environment and now maintains a consequential military and political relationship with Iran. Yet Zaydi identity does not determine Yemen’s political allegiances, while Iranian assistance does not automatically amount to Iranian command.

Ansar Allah was not imported into Yemen. It grew out of the northern highlands, survived six wars against the central government between 2004 and 2010, exploited the collapse of the post-2011 transition and expanded through tribal alliances, military force, political bargaining and the failures of its enemies. Iran subsequently strengthened the movement’s capabilities, but it did not create the social foundations, grievances or political conditions that produced it. The latest offensive must therefore be examined not only through Tehran’s regional objectives, but also through Ansar Allah’s own Yemeni history, constituencies and ambitions.

The sectarian explanation that explains too little

The description of Ansar Allah as an “Iran-backed Shia militia” confronting a “Sunni government” places the regional conflict between Iran and Saudi Arabia at the centre of a war whose principal origins are Yemeni.
