By Elijah J. Magnier:
Before the beginning of the invasion of Lebanon, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu declared that his objective was to “reshape the Middle East.” However, after more than four initial failed attempts on more than one front by Israeli forces to invade Lebanon—resulting in the deaths of eight Israeli soldiers, dozens wounded, and the destruction of three Merkava tanks after an advancing attempt of 400 metres into Lebanese territory—to test Hezbollah’s readiness along the borders will follow daily, Netanyahu was compelled to reassess his goals. He shifted his focus from a broader regional strategy to more limited objectives: the release of Israeli prisoners held in Gaza and the return of northern Israeli residents to their homes.
These new objectives, however, highlight the significant challenges Israel faces without necessarily changing its objective to invade Lebanon and occupy it, if he can, or control a few sensitive high-ground positions where he believes it can offer him a better negotiation position. However, the aim of securing the release of prisoners pertains to Gaza, not Lebanon. At the same time, the return of northern Israeli residents remains equally difficult to achieve. Even if Hezbollah were to withdraw from certain areas in southern Lebanon, its missile arsenal would still be capable of reaching every part of Israel, making the safe return of northern residents impossible without a comprehensive and lasting resolution. Consequently, the military option is expected to reach a dead end, as Israel cannot sustain its occupation of any positions in Lebanon due to Hezbollah’s extensive armament, which can target any location within Lebanon and Israeli-controlled areas in Palestine.
