Last Friday, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenian Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan signed a landmark transit deal at the White House, mediated and hosted by U.S. President Donald Trump. The agreement grants development rights for a strategic transport corridor connecting mainland Azerbaijan to its Nakhchivan exclave via Armenia’s southern Syunik province—rebranded by Washington as the “Trump Route for International Peace and Prosperity” (TRIPP) and informally referred to as the “Trump bridge.”
President Trump hailed the project as a driver of economic revitalisation and regional connectivity, pledging substantial U.S. investment as part of a broader effort to cement American influence in the South Caucasus. However, the initiative has drawn sharp opposition from Tehran and Moscow. Ali Akbar Velayati, senior adviser to Iran’s Supreme Leader Sayyed Ali Khamenei, warned that Iran would act—with or without Russian support—to prevent the corridor’s realisation.
For Iran and Russia, the project represents far more than an infrastructure venture. Strategically, it offers a direct bypass that could weaken their longstanding dominance in the region, potentially shifting the geopolitical balance toward Turkey and the United States.
The plan revives, in modern form, the old Soviet-era link that once connected Azerbaijan proper to Nakhchivan via Armenian territory. Those lines collapsed during the first Nagorno-Karabakh war in the late 1980s and early 1990s. The 2020 ceasefire, brokered by Russia after the Second Karabakh War, mentioned “unblocking” regional communications but stopped short of requiring an extraterritorial corridor. What Washington has now engineered is far more geopolitically charged: a through-route under Armenian sovereignty but opened to Azerbaijani traffic with U.S. and EU guarantees, excluding both Russia and Iran from operational control.
