Tensions have arisen between the Israeli army and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who has sought to blame the military leadership not only for the failures of 7 October but also for his inability to achieve his political goals in Gaza, such as the release of hostages and the dismantling of Hamas and its military capabilities. At the same time, a sharp disagreement has emerged between Netanyahu and the US administration over the absolute military support demanded by the Israeli prime minister, who has constantly criticised the current administration amid the intense electoral conflict between Democrats and Republicans.
President Biden’s administration has rejected Israeli accusations of withholding requested weapons during the war, saying they are false and aimed at confusing the administration in its election campaign. In a statement released by his office, Netanyahu criticised the US for not providing Israel with the ammunition it requested during the war. The US had frozen the delivery of 3,500 light artillery shells of various calibres to Israel while delivering over 100,000 shells and rockets in recent months and opening strategic warehouses in the Negev desert. In addition, the US established an air bridge that enabled some 380 arms shipments by land and sea to Israel, enabling it to sustain its war effort. Israeli military leaders reported using more than three times the amount of ammunition initially planned for the war on Gaza.
