The dialogue between Israel and the United States has reached a crescendo, with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu openly challenging President Joe Biden. As Biden approaches a critical presidential election, he is keen to retain his Democratic and Arab-American supporters. This goal compels him not to compromise his position by softening his unwavering support for Israel. “Netanyahu is doing Israel more harm than good by turning the world against everything he is trying to achieve,” said Biden. But his engagement has not stopped him from publicly rebuking Netanyahu. Gone are the days of subtle hints, media leaks and behind-the-scenes conversations. Biden, a non-Jewish Zionist and leader of the world’s leading power, has openly declared Netanyahu’s actions harmful to Israel and argued that they only serve to unite global opposition to Netanyahu’s goals. Paradoxically, however, this exchange of barbs benefits both sides. It strengthens Netanyahu’s position, subtly acknowledges America’s limited support for Israel, and enhances Biden’s image with voters.
