Trump’s imaginary Gaza transfer plan: A Legal, Political and Humanitarian Disaster

President Donald Trump has proposed a controversial plan to transfer 2 million Palestinians from Gaza to Egypt, Jordan and other countries, with the intention of rebuilding Gaza after “emptying” it of its indigenous population. This proposal not only constitutes a serious violation of international law and human rights norms but also raises urgent questions about its feasibility and political consequences for the region. If implemented, this plan would be one of the most egregious cases of forced displacement and ethnic cleansing in modern history, drawing widespread condemnation and posing grave risks to regional and global stability.

Despite overwhelming international opposition, the United States continues to stand with Israel in support of Trump’s plan. This isolation reflects a broader shift in US foreign policy under Trump, characterised by unilateralism and a disregard for international norms. The plan’s potential to destabilise Egypt and Jordan, key US allies in the region, further underlines its recklessness. Both countries have categorically rejected any attempt to absorb large numbers of Palestinian refugees, fearing serious political, economic and security repercussions.

The biggest obstacle to Trump’s plan, however, is the Palestinian people themselves. The history of Palestinian resilience shows a steadfast refusal to abandon their land, regardless of the hardships imposed by occupation and blockades. Palestinians regard their right to return and remain in Gaza as non-negotiable, deeply rooted in their national identity and historical ties to the land. Any attempt to force them into exile is not only a violation of international law but also a profound misunderstanding of Palestinian determination and resistance. Palestinians have shown time and again that they will not leave their homeland, no matter what the hardship.
