Trump’s Hezbollah Paradox: The President Who Promised to Destroy Hezbollah Is Now Restraining Israel

The most important development in southern Lebanon is not the battle around Ali al-Taher, the destruction of Israeli tanks, or even the casualties suffered by both sides. The real story is political. Donald Trump, who repeatedly vowed to destroy Hezbollah and weaken Iran’s regional influence, now finds himself preventing Israel from pursuing precisely that objective and is calling on Israel to stop firing at Hezbollah.

This paradox emerged clearly during the latest fighting in southern Lebanon. Israeli forces attempted to advance towards the strategic Ali al-Taher hills and nearby Kfar Tebnit, positions overlooking the Nabatiyeh region. Supported by armour, infantry, artillery, drones and intensive air cover, Israeli commanders sought to improve their military posture in an area they consider essential to any future security arrangement.

The operation did not proceed as planned. Hezbollah fighters prepared a sophisticated defensive response, transforming the area into what the organisation described as a carefully organised kill zone. Anti-tank guided missiles struck several Merkava tanks, some reportedly catching fire, while Israeli units came under sustained pressure from multiple directions during the confrontation.
