Netanyahu’s Dilemma and Endless Assaults: US Efforts to Contain an Unwinnable War

Written by Elijah J. Magnier

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is taking indiscriminate action, failing to strike strategic targets that could lead to tangible achievements. The metrics of military success—profit and loss from a strategic perspective—do not align with the mere destruction of cities, killing of civilians, or imposing starvation when leadership falls short of achieving its initial wartime objectives and determining post-war governance. As a political tool, war does not tally victories through infrastructure devastation unless it culminates in the enemy’s surrender—marked by a white flag—or ceases resistance, allowing the aggressor to seize and maintain control over targeted regions and conclude military operations entirely. Even if remnants of resistance persist, wielding basic capabilities or minor forces, they do not alter the new army reality if the conflict resolves with a definitive winner and loser. However, this outcome has not materialised despite over seven months of intense combat and unparalleled destruction.

Yet, a significant challenge confronts what used to be known as “the Middle East’s most formidable military”, which US Secretary of Defence Lloyd Austin has called “professional.” This army undergoes continuous training, engages in numerous individual and joint annual manoeuvres with Western allies, and enjoys extensive financial and military backing worth billions of dollars annually from significant powers and various European industrial nations. The persistent issue is its repeated failures in cities it has occupied and subsequently abandoned, only to concoct multiple unconvincing justifications for a return.

The Israeli Military’s Surprising Failures: A Global Lesson from Gaza

The Israeli army’s unexpectedly weak and unethical performance in the Gaza conflict has captured global attention, prompting observers to draw critical lessons and conclusions. This scrutiny aims to understand the severe blunders that have shocked the international community and led a “professional” military to redirect its frustrations towards civilians and infrastructure.

In the Gaza war, now starting its eighth month, emotional reactions aside, assessments are made based on actual battlefield outcomes. Initially, the United States, Israel’s foremost ally, had anticipated that the Israeli military would conclude the conflict within three to four months. However, after more than five months of continued combat and escalating violence, the US administration began to vocalise its concerns regarding the Israeli forces’ actions and failure to achieve any strategic goals. These have included committing severe atrocities that the global community has condemned, all while failing to achieve the publicly stated military objectives.
