From Ceasefire to Permanent Control: Netanyahu’s Expanding Security Zone Doctrine

By Elijah J. Magnier –

Benjamin Netanyahu has removed much of the ambiguity surrounding Israel’s territorial intentions in Gaza, the occupied West Bank, southern Lebanon and Syria. His government is no longer presenting Israeli military control merely as a temporary response to immediate threats. It is articulating a broader doctrine under which Israel reserves the right to remain inside neighbouring territory until every organisation it considers a danger has been disarmed or eliminated. Because Israel alone determines whether that condition has been satisfied, the proposed security arrangements have no fixed geographical limit, timetable or clearly defined endpoint.

At the opening of a government meeting on 9 August 2026, Netanyahu stated that no Palestinian state would be established under his premiership, either in Gaza or in what he called Judea and Samaria, the occupied West Bank. He dismissed the alternatives as “Fatahstan” and “Hamastan”, portraying both the Palestinian Authority and Hamas as unacceptable foundations for sovereignty. He also rejected the US-backed 15-point Gaza framework promoted by Trump’s Board of Peace, insisting that Israeli forces would not withdraw until Hamas had been genuinely and completely disarmed and all tunnels in Gaza destroyed.
