The American administration has become increasingly vocal about its concerns about the situation in Palestine, trying to convey that the ongoing devastating conflict is beyond its control and expressing dissatisfaction with both the war and the policies of the Israeli government under Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his extremist cabinet members, including Security Minister Itamar Ben Gvir, Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich and the influence of Amichai Eliyahu. This raises the question of whether the US administration and President Joe Biden are diverging from Netanyahu’s objectives and stance on the bitter conflict affecting the Palestinian people in Gaza and the West Bank or whether there is alignment between these two strategic allies.
President Biden has been open about his Zionist beliefs, stressing that “one does not have to be Jewish to support Zionism.” This statement underscores his commitment to Israel’s security and recognition as a sovereign state. It is in line with long-standing US policy to support Israel as a critical ally in the Middle East. Despite the brutal military operations in Gaza affecting his re-election prospects, Biden has reaffirmed his unwavering support for Israel’s security. This stance transcends party lines and is shared by both Republicans and Democrats. This bipartisan support for Israel is a fundamental aspect of US foreign policy, suggesting that American administrations believe that the benefits of maintaining a robust alliance with Israel outweigh any short-term political repercussions and potential for collateral damage amid the evolving dynamics of the Middle East.
