President Joe Biden, leader of the world’s most powerful nation, addressed the ceasefire agreement between Hamas and Israel with a detailed draft at hand received from the Israeli prime minister’s office. Qatar and Egypt have also received this same draft, containing more specifics than what Biden publicly shared overtly. The terms of the agreement, approved by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, were kept secret but are not far from the deal previously approved by Hamas, as Qatar’s foreign ministry’s spokesperson announced. Biden’s address was aimed at several audiences, including his constituents, as he prepares for a presidential election in five months. He sought to demonstrate efforts toward peace in Palestine, responding to widespread outrage over Israeli actions in Gaza.
Biden’s message was also directed at the Israeli people, affirming his support for the recovery of captives and the unconditional security of Israel. Additionally, he signalled to Israeli leaders that it was time to end a war that had not met its objectives. This announcement has sparked various reactions within Israel, indicating the start of negotiations rather than an outright declaration of peace, as the path to a lasting resolution remains long.
Netanyahu’s government’s extremist allies, who have long advocated for occupying Gaza, building settlements, and continuing the conflict, have reacted predictably. Biden’s speech highlighted these intentions, urging Israelis to oppose them, specifically referencing Nationalist Security Miniter Itamar Ben Gvir and Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich. Their statements are intended to pressure Netanyahu, who, despite their influence, promised to provide a copy of the draft Biden referenced. However, National Security Advisor Tzachi Hanegbi, a close ally of the PM, later informed them that “there is no draft,” suggesting Netanyahu strategically manages his allies to maintain power, isolating them from difficult decisions.
