The United States has been a key player in providing military and financial aid to its allies, with Ukraine and Israel being two of the most notable beneficiaries. While both sides receive significant support, the relationship with the US, the nature of their respective conflicts, and the strategic objectives of the aid vary greatly. Assistance to Ukraine mainly focuses on countering Russia, upholding international norms, strengthening NATO, and reaffirming US dominance in Europe. Aid to Israel, however, is geared towards maintaining a strategic alliance, disregarding international law, and ensuring Israeli military superiority in the Middle East.
Realpolitik and US Foreign Aid
US foreign aid is primarily guided by realpolitik—focusing on power and national interest rather than adhering strictly to human rights or international law. In Ukraine, for example, Washington emphasises the need to defend sovereignty and uphold international law in response to the Russian invasion. On the other hand, with Israel, which has been accused of war crimes, civilian massacres, and occupying territories like Gaza and the West Bank, the US tends to pay no heed to these issues. Instead, it prioritises Israel’s military superiority and strategic value in the region, often ignoring actions that contravene international law, such as settlement expansion in the West Bank, the occupation of Lebanese lands, and the Syrian Golan Heights.
