Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu is determined to attack Iran, either to force the United States into war or to defend Israel with all its military might. This conflict offers Netanyahu the opportunity to advance his expansionist agenda and secure his grip on power while hostilities continue. Alternatively, it offers him a golden opportunity to influence the re-election of Donald Trump, especially if the current Democratic administration in the United States is reluctant to provide military support. In Netanyahu’s view, such a reluctance could influence the outcome of the American elections on 5 November this year.
Meanwhile, Israeli preparations for a ground invasion continue, with a focus on southern Lebanon. Netanyahu’s stated aim is to defeat Hezbollah and allow displaced Israelis to return to the north. However, this objective appears increasingly complicated as Hezbollah proves resilient. Israeli ambitions may even grow, especially if they can pave the way for a more expansive campaign, possibly reaching the Lebanese capital, Beirut.
The clashes in southern Lebanon are taking place on four main fronts, with four Israeli divisions (91, 98, 36 and 146) ready to enter Lebanon. The Special Forces are tasked with breaking through Hezbollah’s initial defences, clearing deadly tank traps and preparing the way for the main Israeli ground offensive.
