The Fine Line of Escalation: How Israel’s Attack on Iran Avoided Provoking Full-Scale Retaliation

By Elijah J. Magnier:

For the first time, Israel has officially declared an airstrike on Iran, reportedly mobilising 100 aircraft—both bombers and escort jets—to target 20 sites in western Iran, near the Iraqi border. This operation demonstrates a sophisticated, multi-layered approach designed to maximise precision while minimising risks, particularly given Iran’s formidable air defences. By launching the attack from Iraqi airspace, Israel opted for a path of strategic caution, aiming to reduce direct exposure to Iranian anti-aircraft systems.

Israel has shifted its approach from its previous policy of ambiguity—often framing its actions against regional adversaries as part of a broader “battle between wars” strategy—to overtly claiming responsibility for its recent attack on Iran. By abandoning its previous plan of plausible deniability, Israel is signalling both its commitment to confrontation and its confidence, bolstered by US backing, in openly challenging Iranian capabilities.

Despite the substantial psychological buildup preceding the operation, the strike was limited in scope. It revealed deeper aspects of Israel’s military posture, which is achievable only with significant US support. Although presented as a decisive response, the operation’s restrained nature underscores certain limitations in Israel’s independent capabilities. It highlights its considerable reliance on the United States for planning, target identification, refuelling, and defensive measures. This support includes the deployment of THAAD missile defence systems to pre-emptively counter any potential Iranian retaliation and bolster Israel’s defensive infrastructure.
