The Path to Tehran: Strikes in Yemen Signal a Broader Confrontation with Iran

For the past two weeks, the United States has been conducting near-daily airstrikes on Yemen, marking a significant escalation in the Middle East under the banner of securing maritime navigation in the Red Sea and deterring Ansar Allah – the Houthis. Officially, these strikes target Ansar Allah military objectives and officials who have resumed launching attacks exclusively on Israeli commercial vessels to force Israel’s humanitarian siege on Gaza following Tel Aviv’s violation of the ceasefire. However, there is a more strategic objective behind the pattern of strikes: the gradual dismantling of Iranian-aligned military capacity ahead of a potential confrontation with Iran itself.

The shift is unmistakable. What began as a US and UK campaign to protect international shipping routes has evolved into a protracted aerial operation to support Israel and allow it to continue its starvation and ethnic cleansing in Gaza, with reports of American F-18s and drones striking not just Houthi missile launch sites, but also deeper command-and-control centres in the Yemeni interior. These attacks’ volume, intensity, and persistence have surpassed the initial scope of maritime protection. It is prompting the possibility that Washington and Tel Aviv are attempting to implement a long-term “total deterrence” strategy against Iran’s regional network.

The Strategic Logic: Start in Yemen, End in Tehran

The logic is chillingly linear. U.S. and Israeli planners appear to be working through Iran’s allies one by one, strategically neutralising their capacities to retaliate before taking direct aim at Tehran. Yemen, with its missile and drone capabilities, represents a significant node in the so-called “Axis of Resistance” led by Iran. By degrading Houthi capabilities now, the U.S. and Israel believe they could remove a key threat to Red Sea navigation and, more importantly, secure their southern flank in anticipation of a potential wider conflict.
