In the months since October 7, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has embarked on a broad and aggressive consolidation of power that has shaken the foundations of Israel’s institutional framework. But the trend didn’t begin with the Gaza war – it was well underway before the Hamas attack that shook the country and captured the world’s attention. Now, with national security at the forefront and the opposition fragmented, Netanyahu appears to be moving unchecked.
While waging an unethical and immoral war in Gaza, Netanyahu has systematically moved to sideline Israel’s top security officials – traditionally seen as the apolitical backbone of the state and the ‘temple guards’ (or gatekeepers). In recent months, he has dismissed or sidelined figures such as the chief of staff, the head of the Shin Bet (Shabak) and the director of the Mossad – those traditionally seen as the apolitical backbone of the state.
