Weapons, Sovereignty, and Strategy:Between Ceasefires illusion and Sovereignty, Hezbollah’s Defiance

By Elijah J. Magnier –

In the wake of a punishing conflict that caused widespread destruction but failed to dismantle Hezbollah’s structure or eliminate its leadership and arsenal, the group is now in a phase of recalibration. It is inevitably reorganising itself, reforming its leadership, and rearming—drawing key lessons from the war to adapt and reinforce its position. This reconstitution is not just a sign of survival but a signal of long-term strategic planning in response to military and political pressure.

At the same time, Lebanon’s official institutions—the government and its army—remain largely ineffective in protecting the country’s sovereignty. Over the past five months, since the latest ceasefire was declared, Israel has reportedly violated the agreement thousands of times, killing dozens of Lebanese civilians and unarmed Hezbollah operatives, all with little to no consequence. The Lebanese Armed Forces lack both the operational capacity and the political mandate to deter Israeli overflights, incursions, or expansionist actions. They have also been unable to pressure the United States to compel Israel to withdraw from long-occupied Lebanese territories and newly established buffer zones in southern Lebanon. These repeated violations have only reinforced Hezbollah’s position that its armed presence is not only legitimate but essential—and it is not subject to negotiation or transfer to national institutions. In fact, weapons previously seized by the Lebanese army south of the Litani River were destroyed, reportedly at the request of the U.S. military, which plays a central role in overseeing what was supposed to be the implementation of the ceasefire, Israel’s withdrawal, and Hezbollah’s disarmament in that area.
