Israel’s Message to Iran in Lebanon: Raising the Cost or Halting Provocations

Israel’s recent bombing of Beirut’s southern suburbs at the eve of Eid al-Adha was not the start of a new war, but a deliberate message to Iran: any attempt to destabilise the Lebanon-Israel or Syria-Israel frontiers will trigger disproportionate consequences in Lebanon. This strike was prompted by two blind rockets launched from Syria into the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights. Though the rockets landed harmlessly, Israel’s response was swift and disproportionate.

The rockets were claimed by an obscure militia, Uli Al-Ba’s (“Possessors of Strength”), whose insignia closely mirrors that of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and Hezbollah. This move signalled to Israel that Iran retains influence in the Levant despite facing major setbacks: the unexpected end of Bashar al-Assad ruling, disrupted logistical corridors for Hezbollah, and shrinking regional clout.
