Witkoff Visit Triggers A Crisis of Credibility: Gaza’s Suffering and Famine Are An Illusion.

By Elijah J. Magnier –

When US Presidential Envoy Steve Witkoff stood in Gaza and dismissed the famine—painstakingly documented by UN agencies and humanitarian NGOs—as “narratively exaggerated,” it was more than a political gesture. It marked a defining moment in the erosion of American moral authority on the world stage. A long-simmering crisis of US credibility has now reached a boiling point, not only at the United Nations but across the Global South, where Washington’s legitimacy as a defender of international norms is facing unprecedented scrutiny.

Witkoff’s presence was not merely symbolic. It was a direct message to the global community, especially to the more than 140 countries that have now recognised Palestine as a state. At a time when much of the world was rallying around calls for accountability, humanitarian access, and ceasefire enforcement, Washington doubled down on denialism. By casting doubt on the starvation of over two and a half million besieged civilians—an assessment confirmed by the UN Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC)—Witkoff gave diplomatic cover to an unfolding man-made catastrophe and famine, orchestrated by Israel and sanitised by its closest ally.

Washington’s Attempt to Silence the Global MajorityWitkoff’s mission in Gaza was not only to support Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s government, but also to reassert American hegemony over Middle Eastern discourse. The subtext of his visit was unmistakable: the US alone decides what is true, what is false, and what the world is allowed to say about Gaza.
