By Elijah J. Magnier –
Israel’s army has concentrated its forces and surveillance assets on Gaza City as part of its second ground offensive, Operation Gideon’s Chariots 2. The declared aim is to occupy the city and eliminate what remains of Hamas’s military infrastructure. The undeclared objective is to destroy Gaza City itself and to force one million inhabitants southward toward Rafah, now under Israeli control, where a concentration camp awaits them. For weeks, Israeli officials have insisted that the urban battlefield is sealed off under an impenetrable net of drones, reconnaissance planes, satellites, and ground sensors. They describe Gaza City as a theatre under constant watch, where “not even a mouse can move without being seen.”
And yet, in the midst of this overwhelming display of force, Hamas staged one of the boldest psychological operations of the war: driving an Israeli hostage through Gaza City in broad daylight, filming the journey against identifiable buildings, and releasing the footage for the world to see.
A City Under 24/7 WatchThe surveillance net over Gaza is unprecedented, representing the whole architecture of ISR (Intelligence, Surveillance, and Reconnaissance). In doctrine, ISR is designed to provide commanders with a continuous, real-time picture of the battlefield through the integration of multiple collection streams. Israeli drones orbit constantly, supplying full-motion video and persistent stare capabilities. U.S. and British reconnaissance aircraft circle offshore, gathering signals intelligence (SIGINT) and imagery intelligence (IMINT) from high altitude. Satellites and cyber tools add further layers by intercepting communications, geolocating transmissions, mapping electronic signatures, and cross-referencing with commercial imagery. On the ground, the Israeli army relies on informants, special forces, and the interrogation of captured Gazans to reinforce its human intelligence (HUMINT) networks
