Strategic, Not a Bluff: The US Military Build-Up Near Iran and the Risk of An Imminent War

In recent weeks, Washington has significantly increased its military presence near Iran, sending substantial U.S. naval and air assets to the Persian Gulf and Eastern Mediterranean. This military build-up, together with President Donald Trump’s escalating threats and direct warnings to Tehran, signals that the US is willing to use force if Iran rejects demands on nuclear and missiles production and capabilities. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio claims that “Iran is weaker than ever,” echoing statements from both Israeli and American officials prior to last year’s twelve-day war. The key argument is that this build-up is not merely for show but reflects real preparations for possible conflict.

Washington seems to operate under the belief that a US–Israeli attack would again cause domestic turmoil in Iran. This highlights the strength and preparedness of Iran’s internal security apparatus, which can mobilise a large force to suppress unrest during wartime. The key argument is that current U.S. actions signal a significant strategic shift, not a bluff, with the aim of reinforcing Israel’s position as the regional power and altering the region’s balance of power.

It would be unrealistic to assume that Iran would not respond vigorously to military action. Tehran’s doctrine and capabilities indicate that it views any attack as a serious threat and expects retaliation. Such retaliation would likely be aimed not only at those directly involved but also at those perceived as facilitating the confrontation.

Iran would likely face significant challenges in a conflict, but it may also seek to impose costs on its adversaries. This could include missile strikes against Israeli territory and U.S. military bases in the region, intended to challenge deterrence assumptions and affect the strategic balance before a ceasefire or settlement.
