Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian arrived at the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in Bishkek carrying a message whose urgency was reinforced by events only hours earlier: after six months of war, Iran remains under attack, but it is not isolated.

On Sunday, US forces struck two Iranian launchers on Larak Island in the Strait of Hormuz. Washington said members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps were preparing rockets designed to deploy sea mines into the waterway. Iran acknowledged casualties among fighters and civilians, described the attack as a “strategic and fatal error” and retaliated with ballistic missiles towards American positions and assets in Jordan. Jordan said it intercepted eight missiles entering its airspace. The exchange provided a severe test of what Iran has achieved since becoming a full SCO member in July 2023.
