The United States and Iran have exchanged another wave of missiles and drones, with both sides reporting strikes against multiple targets. The renewed confrontation confirms that the war launched against Iran by Donald Trump’s administration, alongside Israel, is far from over. Six months of bombing have degraded Iran’s military capabilities, but they have neither forced Tehran to submit nor prevented it from striking back.
In Kuhestak, on Iran’s southern coast, a wedding became the latest demonstration of the distance between Washington’s description of a “limited and precise” operation and its consequences on the ground. According to the Iranian Red Crescent and provincial officials, shrapnel from a US strike hit a residential house where families were celebrating. At least five people were killed, including a four-year-old child, and as many as 68 were wounded, most of them women and children. US Central Command said it was aware of the reports, which originated with Iranian authorities, and maintained that American forces do not target civilians. The precise circumstances have yet to be independently established.
The victims were celebrating a marriage beside the Strait of Hormuz, the waterway that has become the centre of a war Trump believed he could control through superior firepower.
