Iran Prepares for the Unthinkable as Washington Negotiates and Strikes
By Elijah J. Magnier
The Republican loss of both chambers of Congress changes the political setting of Washington’s confrontation with Iran, but the new congressional terms begin only on 3 January 2027. Donald Trump therefore retains a Republican-controlled Congress for approximately two months, giving him greater political latitude before the incoming Democratic majorities can exercise their powers. This creates a potentially dangerous window for escalation, rather than an unrestricted mandate. Pete Hegseth could become an early political casualty as Trump seeks to contain the fallout, although replacing him would not prevent subsequent congressional scrutiny. Iran, meanwhile, is preparing its population for severe escalation while keeping diplomatic channels open. Its reported nuclear-emergency broadcasts and preparations for underground civilian shelters signal a determination to prepare for the worst and sustain a prolonged conflict.
