After 471 days of devastating war, the ceasefire agreement between Israel and Hamas has halted one of the most destructive conflicts in recent history. However, its long-term viability and broader implications remain uncertain, even with explicit warnings from US President Donald Trump urging both sides to refrain from actions that could jeopardise the deal. While the first phase has successfully launched a prisoner exchange and a cessation of hostilities set to last 42 days, the political and military repercussions continue to raise critical questions about the region’s stability and the potential for enduring peace.
For Palestinians, the agreement marks the first steps towards returning to their devastated homes. However, the whole movement northward from southern Gaza will only commence on the seventh day, contingent on Israel’s withdrawal from al-Rashid Street. This phased approach highlights the fragile equilibrium underpinning the ceasefire and the immense challenges in reconstruction and resettlement.
For Israel’s leadership, the ceasefire casts a stark light on a sobering reality: despite over 15 months of relentless military campaigns, Hamas has compelled the freedom of Palestinian prisoners, showcased its resilience, and remains far from being decisively defeated. This outcome underscores the limitations of Israel’s strategy and its failure to address the root causes of the conflict, leaving critical questions about its long-term approach to regional security and coexistence.
Former US President Donald Trump played a pivotal role in imposing the ceasefire, overriding resistance from Israeli hardliners. Trump’s involvement underscores the complex interplay of international diplomacy in the conflict. His influence ensured the agreement’s implementation, but the durability of the truce remains in question.
The first phase, scheduled for 42 days, has a clear timeline. However, subsequent phases lack specific deadlines, raising concerns about prolonged negotiations and the potential collapse of the deal.
