Israel’s Defence Minister Israel Katz recently stated that “Israeli forces will remain in the Philadelphi Corridor, as they are in Lebanon and Syria” – an explicit admission of Israel’s continued military occupation of foreign territories. This statement is not only a flagrant violation of international law, but also of the Camp David Accords, which prohibit Israeli military presence in Area A of the Philadelphi Corridor along the Egyptian border. Israel’s continued bragging about its territorial occupation raises serious concerns about the erosion of international agreements and the lack of accountability for these violations under the impotent – or complicit – watch of the international community.
Israel in violation of Camp David
The Philadelphi Corridor is a strategically sensitive buffer zone along the Egyptian-Gaza border, established under the 1979 Camp David Accords between Egypt and Israel. According to the agreement, this area – classified as Zone A – is under full Egyptian sovereignty and control. Israel legally withdrew from the corridor in 2005 as part of its disengagement from Gaza. However, the recent Israeli war and military occupation of the corridor undermine the core principles of the agreement and threaten Egyptian sovereignty.
