By Elijah J. Magnier –
Just hours before Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met Donald Trump at the White House, Hamas fired ten rockets at Ashkelon and Sderot, wounding 27 people. The timing of the barrage was calculated and symbolic – intended as a direct challenge to the Israeli narrative. It was a pointed message to the US president: Netanyahu’s campaign of destruction in Gaza has failed to break the Palestinian resistance. Far from achieving peace or rescuing hostages, his military strategy has only deepened suffering and provoked further defiance. The attack was also a strategic signal – an invitation to both leaders to revive stalled negotiations rather than continue down the path of total annihilation. Israel’s war in Gaza has moved from its original objectives to total occupation of the Strip.
As the war in Gaza enters its eighteenth month, its strategic purpose has collapsed into a grim political farce. What began as a devastating confrontation in the aftermath of 7 October, the Hamas-led incursion into Israel, has become a protracted campaign of destruction without military gain, humanitarian restraint or political resolution. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s desperate grip on power is the only discernible constant.
Amid this devastation, Netanyahu’s sudden summons to Washington may signal a shift – though not necessarily towards ending the war. The visit may be linked not only to Gaza but also to the US attack on Yemen and military preparations for a possible escalation with Iran.
