The abduction of Venezuela’s democratically elected president, Nicolás Maduro, by United States forces marked a watershed moment in the erosion of international law. For the first time in modern history, a sitting head of state wasabducted, kidnapped and forcibly removed from his country by a foreign power without a UN mandate, a declaration of war, and without any multilateral legal framework. While the Trump administration justified the operation through allegations of narcotics trafficking and criminal conspiracy, the available evidence suggests these claims functioned as a legal pretext rather than the true cause. The roots of the operation lie instead in Venezuela’s refusal to submit to US monetary hegemony, particularly its decision to sell oil outside the US dollar system, and in Washington’s long-standing failure to impose political submission on a country holding the largest proven oil reserves on Earth.
