Israel Prepares to Strike Iran Alone, but Preparation Is Not a Decision

Israel is preparing military options for possible independent action against Iran if the United States ends its campaign, reaches an accommodation with Tehran or refuses to support another Israeli escalation. Senior Israeli officials have acknowledged these preparations as Washington searches for a diplomatic exit from the conflict that began in late February 2026. They do not prove that Benjamin Netanyahu has authorised another attack or that a unilateral operation is imminent. Military institutions routinely prepare alternatives for political leaders. In the present context, Israeli signalling also serves to deter Iran, influence negotiations between Washington and Tehran, preserve Israeli freedom of action and reassure a domestic audience dissatisfied with the outcome of the war.

The distinction between planning and authorisation is therefore essential. Israel wants the capability to strike Iran without direct American participation, but has not demonstrated that it can independently reproduce the scale, duration and defensive protection provided by the joint campaign.
